CULTURE NEWS

  • Mayflower descendants met this week to share the real history behind Thanksgiving and described a 66-day voyage with cramped living quarters, basic meals, and reliance on Native Americans for survival. Members from Odessa, Midland, Monahans, and Alpine are working to preserve this family history—challenging the common story of a peaceful feast.  CBS7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTPB is launching a new Digital Messaging and Media Certificate through its Communication Department to give students the skills needed for digital marketing, public relations, and content creation. The 12-credit program uses four communication courses and offers online and on-campus classes—helping students prepare for digital jobs in a fast-changing media world.  Odessa American
  • At Zavala Elementary, third grade teachers Rhonda Chappell and Connie Soto received a $4,500 Education Foundation grant called Rooted in Reading to build an outdoor garden and reading area for students—supporting hands-on math and writing lessons. They plan to start the project in January after roofing work is finished and invite community help.  Odessa American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials in Ector County approved a plan last week to update flood drainage by hiring an engineering firm for a $1.5 million study that will identify flood-prone areas and design retention ponds. The county will work with Odessa to apply for grants to cover construction costs & secure additional funding in future years.  Odessa American
  • Odessa Fire Rescue is urging residents to follow kitchen safety tips as families prepare for Thanksgiving — Captain Ethan Davis advised keeping cooking areas clear, turning pot handles inward, defrosting turkeys before deep frying and checking smoke detectors. The department also recommended planning an escape route to help prevent fires and burn injuries.  CBS7

  • Fans in the Permian Basin and Concho Valley are invited to vote for the West Texas Gametime Play of the Year after 12 weeks of intense game action — the ballot is set in three segments to decide the season's standout play.
