COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Children At Risk is hosting a local conversation to address childcare challenges in the Permian Basin. New data shows that 19 area zip codes are childcare deserts — leaving many working parents with few options and prompting the group to plan for better support.  NewsWest9
  • First Alert 7 departs today with West Texas veterans on the 2025 HonorFlight from Midland International Air and Space Port to travel to Washington, D.C.—they will visit memorials including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Women’s Memorial. The group will return Saturday with Jay Hendricks providing trip updates.  CBS7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Baron Batch, a former NFL running back turned visual artist, will paint a large mural on the West Texas Food Bank to mark its 40 years of service and show his work at the UTPB Art Gallery. Today, Batch leads a public reception and artist talk from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—and on Oct. 11, a free Community Paint Day invites families to join in fun activities.  CBS7
  • The 2nd Annual Odessa Dia de Los Muertos Festival & Parade 2025 will take place downtown on Saturday, October 18 from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM—parade starting at 7:00 PM between 6th and 3rd Street, offering authentic music, food, dancing, and contests for all ages.  CBS7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student-athletes at Texas Permian Basin now have free protein shakes and healthy snacks from the new Nutrition Center located in the Kirk Edwards Human Performance Center—donated by Cindy and Homer Daniels. The center helps athletes recover faster and make better health choices.  CBS7
  • The University of Permian Basin enrolled 7,100 students last year and expects enrollment to rise for the 2025-2026 school year. Officials reported 52% of students receive help with fees by scholarships—record numbers include 585 freshmen, 1,410 graduate students, and 392 transfer students.  CBS7

  • Monica Tschauner, a West Texas woman, turned her battle with cancer into a message of hope and healing by urging others to take quick action with their health—she said that faith, family and perspective helped her cope and guide those facing similar challenges.  NewsWest9
