BUSINESS NEWS

  • Businesses joined an amended lawsuit over faulty water meters in Odessa—Derek Potts of the Potts Law Firm said 40,000 people and businesses were affected.  NewsWest9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Odessa College will host the Permian Basin Energy Day Forum on October 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Wood Health and Science Building, where leading experts and industry professionals will offer panel discussions+ hands-on workshops to teach about seismic energy and workforce opportunities.  CBS7
  • Odessa native Melanie Moore, a longtime educator, debuts a new interactive picture book that helps students with special needs build social skills and confidence—using imaginative storytelling to let readers choose their own breakfast and lunch menus. The book will be published on November 4 for use in ECISD classrooms.  CBS7
  • The Ector County ISD Board of Trustees approved a new total tax rate of $1.0048 on September 16th with a 7—0 vote that lowers the maintenance and operations rate while keeping the interest and sinking rate unchanged.  CBS7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A petition to rename Maple Avenue to 'Charlie Kirk Way' is circulating after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed less than a week ago—Odessa Headlines led the effort and gathered about 750 signatures in 24 hours. The proposal will be brought to the City Council within the next 30 days while Mayor Cal Hendrick calls for public input and a study on the change.  CBS7
  • State Rep. Brooks Landgraf (Odessa) and State Sen. Cesar Blanco said they will try again to pass the Texas STRONG and GROW Texas bills in the 2027 legislative session; the bills would move $500 million a year from oil and gas taxes out of the Rainy Day Fund to pay for roads, water, health care and public safety.  Odessa American
  • Drivers on I-20 will face delays as the right lanes in both directions between mile markers 134 and 136 will be closed for rumble strip operations from Sept. 22 to Sept. 23 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.—TxDOT advises taking alternate routes.  CBS7

  • Alex Bradley is walking from Austin to Oregon to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. He will cross West Texas over the next ten days—if you see him, share an encouraging nod.  CBS7

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school football district games in District 2-6A take place this week—one game is today at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo where Permian and Amarillo Tascosa, both with 2-1 records, play at 7 p.m. Other matchups on Friday feature Odessa High, Abilene High, Midland High, Lubbock-Cooper and San Angelo Central at various locations as teams aim to improve their standings.  Odessa American
