CRIME NEWS

  • Mandy Stanton—also known as Mandy Clark—was arrested on August 19 during a traffic stop in Ector County after officers found fentanyl, a digital scale and other drug tools, and she now faces federal charges for possession with intent to distribute that could lead to up to 20 years in prison.  CBS7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Odessa College is hosting Barry Phillips the Younger’s 40-year retrospective titled '100 Happy Faces' at the Phillips Goff Gallery in Sedate Hall from Sept. 2 through Oct. 3. An artist talk is planned for 4 p.m. on Sept. 16 in the Globe Theater (followed by a reception) with free admission for all.  CBS7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Texas House approved H.B.8, a bill that shortens and redesigns the STAAR exam to return results in 48 hours—allowing three state assessments yearly while stopping extra tests. The measure will take effect in the 2027 to 2028 school year and now heads to the Senate for review.  NewsWest9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas House passed House Bill 8 this week to revise the STAAR test by shortening exams and returning results in 48 hours, with adaptive tests starting in the 2027 to 2028 school year. Rep. Landgraf said the Senate is still debating further changes—aimed at reducing excessive testing—so more work is needed.  CBS7
  • The City of Odessa will begin a water line replacement project along 8th Street and North Dixie Boulevard on Tuesday, Sept. 2—expected to last about three weeks weather permitting. Officials advise drivers to follow detour signs and allow extra travel time during the phased work.  CBS7
  • The Midland Rockhounds honored Odessa PD officer Bailey Martin and Ector County Probation Officer Jayda Floyd during a game today, with fans showing support for their service. Bobby Neal—president of the Midland Deputy Sheriff's Association—is selling merchandise to raise funds for their families.  NewsWest9

HEALTH NEWS

  • In June, Medical Center Hospital earned the HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence from the American College of Cardiology, making it one of only eight Texas hospitals awarded the top platinum level for heart care.
