- ➤ The Recording Library of West Texas will host its first-ever Running in the Dark 5K Run to raise funds for materials that support service users. Participants will pay a $40 entry fee and all proceeds will go toward buying needed supplies—helping the service continue to aid its users. NewsWest9

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Odessa College announced that starting Monday, Sept. 2, the James Segrest Stadium will be available for the 30 for 30 Fitness Challenge—participants can use the track lanes from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday while the First Basin field remains off-limits. - ➤ New Compass Academy Charter School Superintendent Mark Dominguez began his role on July 1, bringing 25 years of experience from Pecos High School and Buena Vista ISD—he is focused on restoring trust by strengthening ties with 180 staff members. - ➤ Crews will begin replacing water lines on N Dixie Blvd and E 8th St on September 2—residents should expect lane reductions and detours from 6th to 10th St and between Moody Ave and Maple Ave as the project lasts about three weeks weather permitting. - ➤ Odessans may face higher property taxes as City Council, the Medical Center, and Ector County propose rate increases with public hearings set on Sept. 9 and City votes from Sept. 17 to 23. The proposals could boost revenue by tens of millions and raise homeowners’ bills by 11% to 64% compared to last year—forcing residents to pay more if the measures pass. Odessa American
- ➤ The Odessa Police Department is accepting applications for the nine-week Citizens Police Academy that starts Oct. 1 — classes are held every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Participants will learn about patrol briefings, K-9 demonstrations, and special operations during this free program.
