COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Odessa will host the 2025 Emergency Preparedness Fair Saturday, September 13 from 10am to 2pm at the Ector County Coliseum—Barn A—located at 4201 Andrews Highway. The free event features Stop the Bleed classes, Women’s Self-Defense classes, two C.R.A.S.E. trainings from 10am to 12pm and 12pm to 2pm, resource booths from multiple agencies, and an animal adoption clinic for $27.  City of Odessa
  • Yesterday, Odessa Police held a wreath-laying ceremony to honor Fallen Corporal G.T. Toal, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1982. The wreath remained on display until sunset so community members could pay their respects—marking his service and sacrifice.  City of Odessa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ector County ISD named its new middle school Adela and Gilbert Vasquez Middle School today after longtime educators, marking a tribute to their service.  NewsWest9
  • Today Ector County ISD announced its new school is named Adela and Gilbert Vasquez Middle School to honor longtime educators, with Gilbert Vasquez having served in the district for 37 years. Vasquez said he hopes the school will inspire students to learn about their legacy (the naming committee reviewed candidates for three months).  NewsWest9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, TxDOT leaders said the Hero Roadside Assistance Program—already patrolling Interstate 20 between Penwell and the Martin County line and State Highway 191 between Midland and Odessa with funding from local partners—is set to expand if more partnerships are formed. The crews help clear stalled vehicles and assist stranded drivers to reduce congestion.  NewsWest9
  • Ector County Judge Dustin Fawcett clarified that the county will see an automatic 9.0814 cent increase per $100 in the INS fund due to a November 2024 certificate of obligation while the M&O tax rate remains unchanged—county law enforcement will receive a 10% pay raise and over 700 county employees will get a 2% increase, with public meetings scheduled for Sept. 4 at 6:00 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 10:00 a.m.  CBS7
