CRIME NEWS

  • Lee Rodriguez, who had past arrests for drugs and theft, was indicted on charges of drug dealing—banned substance inside a jail and carrying a firearm as a felon—after a traffic stop on April 29, and he remains in custody on a $95,500 bond.  NewsWest9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Saudi Arabia, Russia, and six other OPEC-Plus members announced they will increase production by 547,000 barrels per day to undo the cuts made last April and regain market share from Permian Basin shale producers. Odessa oilman Kirk Edwards noted that oil rigs and frac crews have dropped significantly—warning that the U.S. energy industry may soon face a major shortfall.  Odessa American

  • On August 7, The Salvation Army provided a $50 shoe voucher to 438 ECISD students to help them start the school year with confidence—Shoe Carnival also offered a 20% discount and fun carnival activities, while plans are set to give 394 Midland ISD students new shoes on August 15.  CBS7

  • Michael Williams, a 1971 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and former Texas Education Commissioner, said he opposes any effort to reinstate the old name as he believes it disguises a history of division.   • An Ector County judge dismissed Matt Coday’s defamation suit against board member Wallace Dunn—prompting two other defendants to ask for dismissal as well.   • Odessa residents have raised concerns over high water bills after a coding error in the city's system affected around 1,500 accounts—officials fixed the glitch and now offer a 12-month payment plan to ease the charges.
