CRIME NEWS

  • An Odessa woman was arrested on three outstanding warrants and a new felony charge after a standoff with police around 3:15 p.m. on the 2600 block of San Carlos Terrace — officers reported she allegedly choked one person, causing minor injuries before she was taken into custody and is now held without bail at Ector County jail.  Odessa American
  • The Odessa Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit is investigating a suspicious package reported near 16th and Harless, and there is no known threat while drivers are advised to avoid the area + use alternate routes.  CBS7
  • An Odessa man aged 42, Augustine Falana, was arrested Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. on the 800 block of Snyder Street after his neighbor reported that Falana poured gas on two vehicles and tossed a gas can with a lit paper towel into his yard plus he pointed a handgun at the neighbor, leading to felony charges for arson with intentions to damage a habitat and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with bail set at $125,000 at Ector County jail.  Odessa American
  • On July 30 at 5:30 a.m., police responded to a knife attack on the 900 block of West 22nd Street after a 35-year-old man said he was injured in his left arm, right palm and chest when Darian Hinojos, 33, attacked him following a call about an ex-girlfriend—Hinojos admitted throwing the knife and breaking a tail lamp and was arrested Tuesday before being released Wednesday after posting surety bonds totaling $28,500.  Odessa American
  • Odessa police arrested 40-year-old Nohemi Medina after she choked another woman and barricaded herself before officers took her into custody—she now faces charges for assaulting a family member with a prior conviction, burglary of a habitation, assault on a peace officer, and criminal trespass with outstanding warrants.  CBS7
  • A 35-year-old Odessa woman was arrested Monday night for setting fire to a couch and a mattress on the 6300 block of North Alderfer—witnesses said she tossed a lighter before bail was set at $30,000.  Odessa American

  • IDEA Public Schools in the Permian Basin welcomed over 3,000 students for the new school year on Thursday, August 7—450 of whom began at the new IDEA Lopez campus in Odessa. Led by Jessica Berridge and Larry Moore, this campus now serves kindergarten through second and sixth grade and will add a grade each year until it reaches a full K-12 program.  Odessa American
  • UTPB is using virtual reality to help special needs students practice real-world scenarios in a safe setting—this yearlong research project, developed with Bynum school, builds their confidence and improves social skills.  CBS7
