  • Local Ace Hardware stores are partnering to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Medical Center Health System during the Bucket Days Campaign. Today through August 3, customers can donate $5 for a limited-edition, five-gallon bucket — all funds will directly support equipment and care for sick kids.  Odessa American
  • At a meeting on July 30 at Odessa College, the Odessa Rotary Club honored several members for their service. Club President Ed Mendez presented awards, including plaques, pins and Rotary hats, to recent presidents Kim Ortega and Jim Breaux along with legacy members Mark Knox, Dick Sivalls, Leldon Hensley and Pat Austin.  Odessa American

  • Odessa police are seeking three individuals involved in separate theft cases from a United Supermarket at 1350 East 8th Street, a Walmart east, and a Walmart west shopping center—one suspect reportedly left the Walmart west scene in a white Ford Taurus—and they urge anyone with information to call Detective M. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Music City Mall unveiled the Dedication of Freedom statue on Thursday as a life-sized replica of the Iwo Jima monument that honors the bravery of Marines during World War II. The bronze and rock statue stands outside Dillard’s and will later be moved to the Bass Pro Shops development along Highway 191 (Greg Morgan said so) (the move awaits construction completion).  NewsWest9

  • Teachers from Ector County ISD began back-to-school training at Lamar Early Education Center to build safe and joyful classrooms ahead of the new school year + they focused on professional development and lesson planning to support upcoming classes.  NewsWest9
  • Johna Straw, the Permian High School associate principal with 28 years in public education, has been named the Region 18 Outstanding Assistant Principal by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals—she will be honored at the TASSP Summer Workshop in June.  CBS7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dairy Queens across West Texas will donate a portion of every Blizzard sold on Thursday to the Children's Miracle Network at MCH — the funds will support NICU and Pediatrics Unit equipment, education and supplies. The fundraiser, which began in 1984 and raised $18,000 last year, has helped kids like local champion Jaxton receive needed care.  NewsWest9

SPORTS NEWS

  • An Odessa karate and kickboxing team from Matthews Martial Arts is set to represent the United States at the World Kickboxing Organization’s Open World Championships in England from today to August 3—13 fighters from ages 6 to 42 will compete in karate, light kickboxing, and full contact divisions. The team has trained for months with sessions of at least two hours daily and looks forward to showcasing their Texas pride as they prepare to step in the ring.  CBS7
  • Local veteran Bruce Newsome will swim in the NYC SEAL Swim on August 16th to honor fallen Navy SEAL Chris Kyle & support gold star families. The challenge begins at the Empty Sky Memorial in New Jersey and ends at the World Trade Center in Manhattan with three miles to swim, 66 pull-ups, and 300 push-ups.  CBS7
