  • Family, friends, and co-workers gathered Friday at Crossroads Fellowship Church to say goodbye to Jayda Floyd, who lost her life in the Texas flooding disaster.  NewsWest9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Reliant's Wayne Morrison said that air conditioning makes up about 50% of summer energy bills and advised homeowners to adjust their thermostats 4 degrees when away for more than 4 hours—this method saves money without sacrificing comfort. He also recommended avoiding heat-producing appliances during the day and getting the air conditioners serviced annually to ensure efficiency.  CBS7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Samantha Natividad-Ramos, with 18 years in education, was named principal of Blanton Elementary School and plans to lead 437 prekindergarten to fifth grade students as she works with a staff she already admires—she hopes to make a lasting impact on the school.  Odessa American
  • UTPB will begin a major campus construction project on Monday, July 28 that will close the JBS and Maple Avenue entrance, parking lots near the Welcome Center and Library, and the west entrance to the Library for 16 to 18 months while alternative entrances remain available (for example, use the 42nd and Preston Smith Road entrance to access key facilities).  CBS7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • One year after the huge fire at Permian Basin Containers, North Odessa families still face health issues and loss of homes with a lingering toxic smell. A new law—House Bill 3866—will take effect on September 1 to restrict hazardous chemical storage near homes.  CBS7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Earlier this week, Congressman Tony Gonzales honored Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskan with a Congressional Resolution for his heroic actions during the Hill Country floods that saved 165 lives, including many young girls from Camp Mystic. Ruskan, serving at Air Station Corpus Christi on his first rescue mission, credited his entire team (including local agencies and the Army National Guard) for their work in dangerous weather conditions.  CBS7
  • The Ector County Courthouse closed early today after roughly 40 pounds of sewage backed up (Ector County Commissioner Samantha Russell said), prompting officials to investigate the aging infrastructure.  NewsWest9
  • The City of Odessa announced that Phase 3 of Dixie Blvd paving improvements will begin on Wednesday, July 30, reducing the road to one lane in each direction between Gage Avenue and 38th Street. Crews from contractor Reece Albert will work on the west side to remove the old surface and lay new asphalt — detours are clearly marked and drivers should allow extra travel time until the project ends on August 30.  City of Odessa
