- ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Permian Basin celebrated 50 years of mentoring children between 6 and 16 in West Texas this year with weekly community and school-based meetings. Board member Jennifer Conner—who joined as a child and later became a mentor—said the program shows that small acts can change lives. Odessa American
- ➤ KRW Lawyers gives away free bags of groceries every Friday at 10 A.M. The program started on February 21 and now supplies about 50 bags on a first-come plus first-served basis as it seeks partnerships to expand the effort. CBS7

- ➤ Odessa police are asking for public help to identify a man accused of burglarizing a Family Dollar Tree on N. County Road—authorities urge anyone with useful details to contact them immediately. CBS7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lupe Barnett, an administrative assistant at the UTPB Success Center, won the Extra Mile Service Award for her work helping students and supporting Dean Michael Frawley—she has worked at UTPB since August. - ➤ Lyndsay Eiben (Odessa native) has been named director of bands at UTPB after years as an associate director with Ector County ISD, and she plans to expand the program by boosting student enrollment and launching a summer band camp (June 22-27). Odessa American

- ➤ Odessa Police Department K9s Jannis, Noxx and Sonic will receive bullet and stab vests over the next 10 weeks from nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vests—each worth $1,800 and weighing 4 to 5 pounds—feature embroidery honoring Ronnie R. Gary on Noxx's vest, Bill Jennings on Sonic's vest and a tribute on Jannis's vest. CBS7
- ➤ The City of Odessa will begin its seal coat project on Monday, June 2 and will work on coating city streets over three days, weather permitting. The seal coating is meant to extend pavement life and improve driving conditions on key routes — including one stretch from Medical Park to Dr. Emmitt Headless. CBS7
- ➤ An El Paso woman filed a lawsuit in Ector County District Court over a June 2023 crash when officer Gabriela Carrasco did not stop at a sign, colliding with her at the intersection of 4th Street and Texas Avenue—she was taken to Medical Center Hospital with head, neck, shoulder, back and left leg injuries and is seeking damages with attorney Ruben Hernandez. - ➤ The Permian Basin Regional Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is now Basin Lighthouse — Executive Director Jennifer Weston said employees chose the new name to clearly reflect their focus on substance abuse prevention and intervention.
