  • The annual Odessa Midland Police Memorial was held Thursday morning at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home to honor the eight officers and two K-9s who died in 2025 across Odessa, Midland, and Lubbock — with officers from local agencies and victims’ families in attendance.  CBS7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Brian Schroeder has been named TTUHSC School of Medicine’s regional dean in the Permian Basin effective May 1. He served as interim dean (since May 2025) and said he will keep working to strengthen local healthcare partnerships.  CBS7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • May 7 was proclaimed Jay Hendricks Day in Midland and Odessa after mayors Cal Hendrick and Lori Blong honored the longtime news anchor at a luncheon hosted by Scouting America at the Marriott Hotel + Conference Center.  CBS7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Billy Cook, a longtime Midland optometrist, will retire from Vision Health Specialties on Tuesday, June 30 after 51 years of serving local families; he plans to move to Florida to enjoy ice skating and trapeze training.  CBS7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Odessa Compass baseball earned its first Area Championship Thursday by defeating Tulia at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School and advances to the Regional Semifinals. Reagan County softball reached the Regional Finals with a win over Clarendon, and Permian baseball lost Game 1 of its Area series at Frenship Memorial High School.  NewsWest9
  • UTPB baseball freshman Daylon Jefcoats, the Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, entered the NCAA Transfer Portal Thursday. The Andrews native played in 50 games this season and hit a .365 average with nine home runs, making a strong impact on the team.  NewsWest9
  • McLennan Community College baseball forced an 11-1 run-rule win over Odessa College Thursday at Wrangler Ballpark. Game 2 is scheduled for today at 1 p.m. with Game 3 possible Saturday if needed.  NewsWest9
