  • United Family donated 4,800 pounds of apples to the West Texas Food Bank as part of its Take a Bite Out of Hunger program—this gift is one portion of 50,000 pounds of apples across Texas and New Mexico and marks the program’s 15th year of support.  CBS7

CRIME NEWS

  • The Ector County Sheriff's Office warned residents on May 6 about a scam involving a caller using a deputy’s name and the number 432-535-5393—officials stress that officers never call about warrants or jury duty and advise against sharing personal information.  CBS7
  • Samuel Chavira was convicted Monday by an Ector County jury for first-degree murder after he shot his wife, Arely Sotelo Navarrette, whose body was found at their Layla Lane home on Jan. 8, 2022, and he received a 40-year sentence—his confession and a .22 caliber pistol found at the scene were key to the verdict.  Odessa American
  • Odessa Police arrested 59-year-old Maria Valenzuela De Galindo for failing to stop and render aid after her silver Chevrolet Malibu struck a pedestrian at Grandview & Laredo at around 5:31 a.m. this morning, with the injured person taken to a local hospital for serious bodily injuries.  CBS7

  • Odessa City Councilman Eddie Mitchell apologized on May 6th for his comments and said he will ask to delay changes to mobile home rules until public meetings gather local input — his move came after more than two hours of strong feedback from residents. The council is set to discuss the matter on May 27th before any vote is taken.  Odessa American
  • Odessa City Councilman Eddie Mitchell is apologizing today at an 11 a.m. City Hall news conference for remarks that stirred racial overtones on the Odessa Headlines Facebook page & he will move to table the disputed mobile home ordinance at the next council meeting to address community concerns.  Odessa American

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Timothy Benton began his role as Chief Medical Officer at Medical Center Health System at the end of April after 13 years working in Odessa. He will work with the medical staff & Texas Tech to ease administrative burdens and restore the doctor-patient relationship.  Odessa American
  • Texas health officials said West Texas has seen 702 measles cases in 29 counties — most in Gaines County where the outbreak began and two unvaccinated children died from measles-related illness. North Dakota also reported four linked cases in Williams County, marking its first measles outbreak since 2011.  Odessa American

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of Texas Permian Basin’s cheer and dance teams shined at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla.—the dance team placed fourth in finals and the cheer squad reached the winner’s circle with a third-place finish. Spirit Coordinator Terry Lane and Dance Coach Brooklyn Anderson said more than half of their students will return next year to build on these achievements.  Odessa American
