  • At its 36th annual awards ceremony, the Odessa Chamber of Commerce honored local business leader Ravi Shakamuri — CEO of Star Tech Group — for his work helping students gain tech skills to become economically independent, a reminder of the importance of small business growth in our community.  CBS7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cinco de Mayo events begin Friday with a 2 p.m. reception at the Ector County Library and a 5 p.m. mixer at the Elegante — families can also enjoy Dia de Los Ninos at Floyd Gwin Park on Saturday, with more events planned next week.  Odessa American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Odessa College hosted its second annual Nursing Mental Health Day ahead of finals week, where health science students learned stress management techniques and took part in zen garden and therapy dog sessions with retired Air Force Captain Roy Browning as keynote speaker.  CBS7
  • The P.A.L. Summer Camp will run Monday, June 1 through Friday, June 26 at 1015 North County Road West, offering five spots for girls ages 10-11 and two for ages 8-9. Registration is first come, first serve with a $100 fee; forms are available at the Police Department front desk.  CBS7
  • Odessa High School celebrated its revalidation as an AVID National Demonstration School, a distinction earned by roughly the top 2% of AVID schools. A revalidation team visited classrooms this week to review the school’s implementation of AVID strategies that support student success.  Odessa American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ember, the Permian Basin's first arson detection K-9, is now serving in Midland County to speed up fire investigations. The canine’s training and deployment were funded by a Chevron grant at no cost to taxpayers.  CBS7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Permian Regional Medical Center is facing severe financial challenges and could face bankruptcy if changes are not made soon. Hospital leaders are considering several options and will update the community as decisions progress.  NewsWest9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Odessa College beat Midland College 6-3 and 4-1 Thursday at Wrangler Field (despite weather concerns) and will resume the series Saturday at noon.  NewsWest9
