CRIME NEWS

  • The mother of an Odessa High School student filed a lawsuit alleging that principal Anthony Garcia ran over her 14-year-old son with an ATV during recess on Sept. 15 while he played football on campus - she is seeking $250,000-$1 million in damages.  Odessa American
  • On Friday, an Odessa man, Jose Ramiro Ley, was arrested after he found his wife at a friend’s house on Pueblo Street and threatened both her and the homeowner with a loaded handgun, police said—he was released Monday after posting $130,000 bond.  Odessa American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers at the Transition Learning Center received grants from the Education Foundation to help students learn practical life and job skills—helping fund a simulated classroom debit card system for budgeting, chicken care for homesteading, woodshop safety training with a new planer, and culinary skills including food handler certification. These grants, which provide up to $1,000 each, aim to give students hands-on experiences that prepare them for jobs and independence.  Odessa American
  • The Human Rights Club at OCTECHS will host a symposium at Odessa College with a community night on May 15 from 6 to 8 in the Zant Community Room—nonprofit organizations will be invited and sponsors sought to help raise $5,000.   • Mayor Cal Hendrick challenged a TGAA billboard that criticizes the city council for a lack of transparency after the nonprofit in litigation with the city rented the space on 8th Street and Grandview Avenue. He asked who paid for the ad and questioned the conflict of interest and undisclosed financing behind the effort—raising concerns about ethics and proper oversight in city governance.  Odessa American
