- ➤ The Odessa Police Athletic League is still accepting limited registrations for its summer program from Monday, June 2nd through Friday, June 27th. Children will participate in sports like baseball, basketball, volleyball, kickball, dodgeball, swimming, and bowling while parents submit a $100 fee in cash, money order, or credit card at the OPD Front Desk at 205 N Grant—registrations will close when spots are full. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Odessa College Band meets Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jack Rodgers Fine Arts Building while OC Jazz Band gathers Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m., with both groups totaling about 65 members that include community and college musicians. The bands will perform free concerts on April 30 in the Wood Health Science Building community room and May 1 at the Jack Rodgers Fine Arts Building — with guest conductor Dan Gibbs and a new commissioned piece planned for the fall. - ➤ Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Division of Emergency Management urged Texans to use the Emergency Supplies Sales Tax Holiday starting Saturday, April 26 through Monday, April 28 to purchase emergency supplies like flashlights, first aid kits, or fire extinguishers tax free. The tax holiday, established in 2015, helps residents prepare for severe weather + the start of hurricane season on June 1. Odessa American
- ➤ The Odessa City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to rename a 2.59-mile stretch of streets in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Councilmember Eddie Mitchell led the effort to change Murphy Street from Grant Avenue to Standard Avenue, Standard Avenue from Murphy Street to Dixie Boulevard, and Murphy Street from Dixie Boulevard to Interstate Highway 20 — drawing strong local support.
