COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Odessa Police Athletic League will offer a summer program for kids from June 2nd to June 27th, running daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is scheduled for April 19th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Floyd Gwinn Gym (1015 N County Rd. W) on a first come, first serve basis for a fee of $100 per child paid by cash or money order.  City of Odessa

CRIME NEWS

  • A San Angelo woman was booked in Ector County Jail Wednesday after a 36-year-old Odessa man was hit by a beer bottle thrown during an argument and suffered a deformed right eye; he underwent surgery and she faces charges of aggravated assault & her bond is set at $50,000.  Odessa American

CULTURE NEWS

  • UTPB Music Department will host Noche de Mariachis at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center on April 5 at 5:30 p.m.—free admission is offered for a showcase featuring top student mariachi groups from across the region. The musicians will rehearse on April 4 and 5 and perform a set of five songs with a clinician from Roma ISD guiding the all-region group.  Odessa American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newly named Ector County ISD Superintendent Keeley Boyer gave her first State of the District address at Odessa College on April 3 and outlined plans to finish the school year strong while launching a new five-year strategic plan for the district, which now serves 33,600 students. She detailed efforts to boost kindergarten readiness and improve teacher and principal incentive programs—measures aimed at reinforcing the district’s growth and safety.  Odessa American
  • Odessa College President Gregory Williams held a news conference on Thursday in the Zant Room to answer questions about the $325 million bond — if approved, it will add about $13.65 per month to an average homeowner’s taxes and fund campus improvements. Early voting runs April 22-25 and April 28-29, with Election Day set for May 3.  Odessa American
  • Three Midland ISD educators, Liliana Iza, Erica Lujan, and Lauren Vargas, finished Texas Tech’s Principal Fellows master's program that trains teachers to become campus leaders. The program paid for tuition, fees and books while offering mentorship from experienced principals.  Odessa American

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A recent analysis by Texans for Natural Gas shows that the Permian Basin reached one of its lowest methane intensity levels at 0.49 metric tons per barrel in 2023—an 83% drop since 2011 as production climbed by 482 percent. The report says record oil and natural gas output helped keep overall emissions low.  Odessa American
