COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During Women’s History Month, 101-year-old Cornelia Fawner Meachum, a long-time Odessa resident who moved here in the 1950s when her husband found work in the oil fields, has exemplified a life filled with faith, hard work, and family. She raised five children, pursued passions like painting and writing her autobiography, and now looks forward to her 102nd birthday on July 28th—she even enjoys a donut at every chance.  CBS7
  • The Permian High School Students in Philanthropy team won the Community Captain contest on March 27th—earning a $10,000 donation from Chevron to fund their project at the school fieldhouse. Volunteers including Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders helped assemble 250 comfort kits for the Crisis Center of West Texas to support sexual violence victims.  Odessa American
  • Permian High School hosted two Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders for a special service day in which students and volunteers made over 200 care packages for domestic violence victims to be donated to Midland Crisis Center. Permian alum Julissa Garcia—now a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader—joined the event and the student project won a contest after presentations to Dallas Cowboys and Chevron employees.  CBS7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Odessa High School Color Guard will compete in state preliminaries tomorrow at The Colony High School with their show called Home and will advance to Sunday's competition in Coppell if they rank in the top 14. Director Hector Guerrero (who praised the team's rapid improvements) said the group is ranked number 10 (a sign of strong potential).  Odessa American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Odessa is considering a change to the food truck ordinance to lower barriers for new food truck owners, and officials plan to share more details soon.  NewsWest9
  • TxDOT is planning a 10-mile four-lane relief route on the east side of Pecos that will include a divided highway with new interchanges and frontage roads. Officials will hold a public feedback hearing on April 8 from 5—7 p.m. at the Reeves County Civic Center, 1500 S. Cedar St., Pecos.  CBS7
  • TxDOT will host a virtual public hearing with an in-person option on April 8 at Reeves County Civic Center—virtual participants may comment by 5 p.m. and in-person attendees can join from 5 to 7 p.m. The project proposes a new 10-mile four-lane divided highway with new interchanges—comments must be submitted by April 23 to be included in the official record.  Odessa American

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ector County Health Department confirmed two new measles cases in vaccinated adults reported on March 27, adding to an earlier case in an infant too young to be vaccinated and a case in a child with mild symptoms. The department is contacting individuals who visited Odessa locations between March 17 and March 22 — including Dollar General, Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club and PetSmart — to prevent further spread.  Odessa American
  • Dr. Vivek U. Rao, MD, based in Odessa since 2006, said that Medicare cuts have forced patients to drive hours for needed care and made it hard for local doctors to serve new Medicare patients in West Texas and southeast New Mexico—raising concerns that practices may soon reduce services. He urged Congress to pass the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act so rural healthcare can remain available.  Odessa American
