  • West Texas Gifts of Hope held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new extension to Hope House near Medical Center Hospital and West Texas Cancer Center in Odessa—this project marks the start of new community improvements.  NewsWest9
  • The Ector County Library unveiled its new Words on Wheels mobile library to patrol the community with books—along with DVDs and WiFi hotspots—to reach residents in areas without access to the main library building. The board continues to work on renovating the library to further improve outreach.  CBS7
  • A Neighborhood Watch meeting on fraud prevention will be held Tuesday, March 25th at 6 p.m. at the OPD Training Facility at 210 N. Lincoln to discuss protecting identities and financial information — covering common scams and credit card abuse awareness.  City of Odessa

CRIME NEWS

  • A 24-year-old New Mexico man, Ezequiel Ramos Fernandez, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Odessa after his roommate reported he threatened him with a 9 mm Sig Sauer gun during a fight over money at the Baymont Hotel — officers recovered drug paraphernalia, a baggie of marijuana and a bullet, and Fernandez now faces charges of aggravated assault and unlawful carrying while on an ICE hold.  Odessa American
  • Odessa Police are investigating credit card abuse after an unknown male used a stolen card to purchase hundreds of dollars in merchandise at several local businesses—anyone who recognizes the suspect in surveillance footage is urged to contact Detective Y. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After being sworn in, Mayor Cal Hendrick and the new council rescinded an old contract with TGAA that the previous council signed, prompting TGAA to seek arbitration on Feb. 7. Ector County District Court Judge Lori Ruiz-Crutcher granted a temporary restraining order on March 7 and scheduled a hearing for April 4 to review the challenge.  Odessa American
  • The Texas Senate and House—two chambers of the Legislature—are working to pass a school voucher program that would let families use education savings accounts to pay for private school costs. Lawmakers will reconcile differences in funding and special education testing rules before the plan goes to Gov. Abbott.  Odessa American
