- ➤ MJ Dinkins, a World War II Navy veteran, celebrated his 100th birthday with VFW Post 4149 on Friday, March 14th—he recalled serving on a minesweeper during the war—and said not worrying about small things helped him live a long life. CBS7
- ➤ Virginia Tech and Fix West Texas are working with Midland Animal Shelter on a five-day hybrid fostering program to help shelter dogs be adopted faster. The project tracks dog behavior with a Fitbit collar while the shelter waives adoption fees until March 24th. CBS7
- ➤ The West Texas Food Bank received 20,000 pounds of dry goods from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on March 14 to support families facing hunger. An event will be held on March 17 at the WTXFB — Odessa Campus to honor the donation. Odessa American

- ➤ A joint venture from New Era Helium and Sharon AI signed a Letter of Intent to purchase 200 acres near Penwell for a planned 250 MW net-zero energy data center in west Ector County. Economic development director Tom Manskey said the project will undergo due diligence and may hire 35 to 75 workers+ partner with local colleges as it aims for partial operations by late 2026. - ➤ Keeley Boyer became Ector County ISD’s first woman superintendent in more than 100 years—she served as interim superintendent since August 2024 and chief of schools since September 2021. She will work with the board in April on a five-year plan to boost student performance and expand academic and fine arts programs. Odessa American
- ➤ Krish Patel, a 14-year-old eighth-grader at Nimitz Middle School, won the regional spelling bee held at Odessa High School Performing Arts Center and will compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor from May 27th to 29th. He studies hard each day and his chance came through determination (with strong support from his mom) that kept the school bee going. Odessa American

- ➤ Windy and dry conditions in Odessa are raising the risk of fire as sparks from outdoor debris burning, grinding or welding can start wildfires, the Texas A&M Forest Service (Region 7) warns and says embers can travel up to 2 miles. Residents should clear dead vegetation from yards and avoid parking in tall dry grasses to reduce risk and call 9-1-1 if they see smoke. CBS7
